Mission:
Teacher to Teacher (T2T) is an interdisciplinary working group of faculty whose purpose is to promote campus-wide conversations about effective teaching, whether that teaching occurs in a traditional classroom, in online digital space, or in other educational contexts.
Objectives of the T2T working group include supporting faculty by:
- Creating professional development opportunities for the exchange of pedagogical ideas
- Encouraging pedagogical innovation based on best practices
- Recognizing diversity in teaching and learning styles
- Fostering opportunities for faculty collaboration
T2T Knowledge Repository
Faculty across campus have generated videos and documents sharing their tips and tricks for the classroom. This information has been gathered and is hosted in a D2L shell called the Teacher 2 Teacher Knowledge Repository. Stop in and check it out! Instructions on how to self-enroll in the course can be found here. See how faculty use elements of D2L in their courses and take tours of shells for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.
Past Events:
Look Who's Talking! Speaking Across the Disciplines
Faculty from across campus came together to share best practices related to speaking in the classroom. Four broad categories of communication were addressed: informal classroom participation, online communication, difficult conversations, and assessing/evaluating speaking. Slides and handouts from the presentations can be found on the T2T Knowledge Repository.
OERs at CMU
Faculty gathered to learn about open educational resources and hear from faculty who have created and/or adopted material. Watch your emails for information on applying for funding to create or adapt or adopt your own content!
T2T Table Talk
You asked and T2T heard! In response to your suggestions, T2T, in conjunction with the Faculty Success Committee, hosted an informal peer-mentoring event at The Point. Participants divided into small groups and exchanged strategies for navigating academic life and pedagogical challenges (large and small). Tables were stocked with questions/issues that have surfaced during past events, but priority was given to the questions participants brought. This event will repeated again in Spring 2022.
G.I.F.T.s to Share: Great Ideas for Teaching!
At this T2T event, colleagues shared Great Ideas for Teaching (GIFTs) to energize and motivate students. They also shared tools and tricks to help explain a concept or reinforce a point. The printable handouts describe the talks and provide info that is transferable across disciplines.
- Find information on support services and faculty and staff resources at the Faculty page. This includes links to reserve a space on campus for events or meetings.
- The Faculty Resources page on the Academic Affairs site includes information on tenure and promotion, academic support services, campus calendar information, and the New to CMU Faculty Guide.
- Faculty Focus is a simple, well-organized resource arranged in blog-style posts with great information on general pedagogical challenges we all face in our classrooms. Their free newsletter and dedicated website focus on sharing information on effective teaching strategies for the college classroom.
- The National Education Association (NEA) partnered with the Professional and Organizational Development Network to provide practical advice to college and university faculty. Their Higher Education Best Practices - Teaching & Learning guides are a great collection of articles covering valuable teaching practices such as using social media in the classroom, commanding the attention of students, how to teach for "deep learning," and more.
